Canonicalize paths when running tests (#23655)
In the Windows test environment, the paths generated by `temp_tree()`
are symlink paths, which causes certain tests to fail.

I later noticed that when opening a project, we seem to always use
`canonicalize` to normalize the paths, as shown here:
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/21039.

This PR adopts a similar approach for the test environment to address
the issue.

Eliminate GPUI View, ViewContext, and WindowContext types (#22632)
There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:

- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`

Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!

Tasks:

- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running

- [x] remove `observe_new_window_models`, replace with
`observe_new_models` with an optional window
- [x] Fix a bug where the project panel would not be redrawn because of
the wrong refresh() call being used
- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`
- [x] Fix conflicts
- [x] Simplify generic code where possible
- [x] Rename types
- [ ] Update docs

git: Handle git status output for deleted-in-index state (#23483)
When a file exists in HEAD, is deleted in the index, and exists again in

windows: Fix FS-related issues (#23369)
I've noticed an occasional error: `ignoring event C:\some\path\to\file
outside of root path \\?\C:\some\path`. This happens because UNC paths
always fail to match with non-UNC paths during operations like
`strip_prefix` or `starts_with`. To address this, I changed the types of
some key parameters to `SanitizedPath`. With this adjustment, FS events
are now correctly identified, and under the changes in this PR, the
`test_rescan_and_remote_updates` test also passes successfully on
Windows.

git: Git Panel UI, continued (#22960)
TODO:

- [ ] Investigate incorrect hit target for `stage all` button
- [ ] Add top level context menu
- [ ] Add entry context menus
- [x] Show paths in list view
- [ ] For now, `enter` can just open the file
- [ ] 🐞: Hover deadzone in list caused by scrollbar

This PR continues work on the feature flagged git panel.

Changes:
- Defines and wires up git panel actions & keybindings
- Re-scopes some actions from `git_ui` -> `git`.
- General git actions (StageAll, CommitChanges, ...) are scoped to
`git`.
- Git panel specific actions (Close, FocusCommitEditor, ...) are scoped
to `git_panel.
- Staging actions & UI are now connected to git!
- Unify more reusable git status into the GitState global over being
tied to the panel directly.
- Uses the new git status codepaths instead of filtering all workspace
entries

windows: Fix fs watch when file doesn't exist or is a symlink (#22660)
Closes #22659

More context can be found in attached issue.

This is specific to Windows:

1. Add parent directory watching for fs watch when the file doesn't
exist. For example, when Zed is first launched and `settings.json` isn't
there.
2. Add proper symlink handling for fs watch. For example, when
`settings.json` is a symlink.

This is exactly same as how we handle it on Linux.

Release Notes:

- Fixed an issue where items on the Welcome page could not be toggled on
Windows, either on first launch or when `settings.json` is a symlink.

Restructure git diff state management to allow viewing buffers with different diff bases (#21258)
This is a pure refactor of our Git diff state management. Buffers are no
longer are associated with one single diff (the unstaged changes).
Instead, there is an explicit project API for retrieving a buffer's
unstaged changes, and the `Editor` view layer is responsible for
choosing what diff to associate with a buffer.

The reason for this change is that we'll soon want to add multiple "git
diff views" to Zed, one of which will show the *uncommitted* changes for
a buffer. But that view will need to co-exist with other views of the
same buffer, which may want to show the unstaged changes.

### Todo

* [x] Get git gutter and git hunks working with new structure
* [x] Update editor tests to use new APIs
* [x] Update buffer tests
* [x] Restructure remoting/collab protocol
* [x] Update assertions about staged text in
`random_project_collaboration_tests`
* [x] Move buffer tests for git diff management to a new spot, using the
new APIs

Better absolute path handling (#19727)
Closes #19866

This PR supersedes #19228, as #19228 encountered too many merge
conflicts.

After some exploration, I found that for paths with the `\\?\` prefix,
we can safely remove it and consistently use the clean paths in all
cases. Previously, in #19228, I thought we would still need the `\\?\`
prefix for IO operations to handle long paths better. However, this
turns out to be unnecessary because Rust automatically manages this for
us when calling IO-related APIs. For details, refer to Rust's internal
function
[`get_long_path`](017ae1b21f/library/std/src/sys/path/windows.rs (L225-L233)).

Therefore, we can always store and use paths without the `\\?\` prefix.

This PR introduces a `SanitizedPath` structure, which represents a path
stripped of the `\\?\` prefix. To prevent untrimmed paths from being
mistakenly passed into `Worktree`, the type of `Worktree`’s `abs_path`
member variable has been changed to `SanitizedPath`.

Additionally, this PR reverts the changes of #15856 and #18726. After
testing, it appears that the issues those PRs addressed can be resolved
by this PR.

### Existing Issue
To keep the scope of modifications manageable, `Worktree::abs_path` has
retained its current signature as `fn abs_path(&self) -> Arc<Path>`,
rather than returning a `SanitizedPath`. Updating the method to return
`SanitizedPath`—which may better resolve path inconsistencies—would
likely introduce extensive changes similar to those in #19228.

Currently, the limitation is as follows:

```rust
let abs_path: &Arc<Path> = snapshot.abs_path();
let some_non_trimmed_path = Path::new("\\\\?\\C:\\Users\\user\\Desktop\\project");
// The caller performs some actions here:
some_non_trimmed_path.strip_prefix(abs_path);  // This fails
some_non_trimmed_path.starts_with(abs_path);   // This fails too
```

The final two lines will fail because `snapshot.abs_path()` returns a
clean path without the `\\?\` prefix. I have identified two relevant
instances that may face this issue:
-
[lsp_store.rs#L3578](0173479d18/crates/project/src/lsp_store.rs (L3578))
-
[worktree.rs#L4338](0173479d18/crates/worktree/src/worktree.rs (L4338))

Switching `Worktree::abs_path` to return `SanitizedPath` would resolve
these issues but would also lead to many code changes.

Any suggestions or feedback on this approach are very welcome.

Add File.disk_state enum to clarify filesystem states (#20776)
Motivation for this is to make things more understandable while figuring
out #20775.

This is intended to be a refactoring that does not affect behavior, but
there are a few tricky spots:

* Previously `File.mtime()` (now `File.disk_state().mtime()`) would
return last known modification time for deleted files. Looking at uses,
I believe this will not affect anything. If there are behavior changes
here I believe they would be improvements.

* `BufferEvent::DirtyChanged` is now only emitted if dirtiness actually
changed, rather than if it may have changed. This should only be an
efficiency improvement.

Add initial FreeBSD support (#20480)
This PR adds initial support for FreeBSD

still work left to be done, it seems to be usable. As discussed by
@syobocat (https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/10247), the
changes were just adding ```target_os = "freebsd"``` to wherever it
checks if the OS is Linux.

![image](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/80ea5b29-047f-4cbd-8263-42e5fa6c94b7)

Needs to be build with ```RUSTFLAGS="-C link-dead-code"```

Known Issues:
- There's an issue in ```crates/project/src/environment.rs``` where a

```-l``` option.
![image](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/c3c38633-160f-4f47-8840-e3da67f6ebc8)
- The file/folder choosers provided by the ```ashpd``` crate don't work
on FreeBSD (at least with KDE). This isn't that bad since a fallback
dialog is used.
 - Moving to trash won't work.
- Numerous tests fail (when running on FreeBSD). While I haven't looked
into this much, it appears that the corresponding features seem to work
fine.
git: Add support for opening git worktrees (#20164)
This adds support for [git
worktrees](https://matklad.github.io/2024/07/25/git-worktrees.html). It
fixes the errors that show up (git blame not working) and actually adds
support for detecting git changes in a `.git` folder that's outside of
our path (and not even in the ancestor chain of our root path).
(While working on this we discovered that our `.gitignore` handling is
not 100% correct. For example: we do stop processing `.gitignore` files
once we found a `.git` repository and don't go further up the ancestors,
which is correct, but then we also don't take into account the
`excludesFile` that a user might have configured, see:
https://git-scm.com/docs/gitignore)
Add support for self-hosted GitLab instances for Git permalinks (#19909)
This PR adds support for self-hosted GitLab instances when generating
Git permalinks.
If the `origin` Git remote contains `gitlab` in the URL hostname we will
then attempt to register it as a self-hosted GitLab instance.
A note on this: I don't think relying on specific keywords is going to
be a suitable long-term solution to detection. In reality the
self-hosted instance could be hosted anywhere (e.g.,
`vcs.my-company.com`), so we will ultimately need a way to have the user
indicate which Git provider they are using (perhaps via a setting).
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/18012.
This fixes an issue I was seeing locally when trying to run tests in the
`worktree` crate:
```
λ cargo test -p worktree -- test_repository_subfolder_git_status
   Compiling worktree v0.1.0 (/Users/maxdeviant/projects/zed/crates/worktree)
error[E0432]: unresolved import `rpc::AnyProtoClient`
  --> crates/worktree/src/worktree.rs:39:18
   |
39 | use rpc::{proto, AnyProtoClient};
   |                  ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ no `AnyProtoClient` in the root

For more information about this error, try `rustc --explain E0432`.

chore: Fix some violations of 'needless_pass_by_ref_mut' lint (#18795)
While this lint is allow-by-default, it seems pretty useful to get rid
of mutable borrows when they're not needed.

Use const over static for string literals (#18635)
I noticed a few places where we were storing `&'static str`s in
`static`s instead of `const`s.

This PR updates them to use `const`.

ssh remoting: Fix SSH connection not being closed (#18329)
This fixes the `SshSession` being leaked.

There were two leaks:

1. `Arc<SshSession>` itself got leaked into the `SettingsObserver` that
   lives as long as the application. Fixed with a weak reference.
2. The two tasks spawned by an `SshSession` had a circular dependency
   and didn't exit while the other one was running. Fixed by fixing (1)
   and then attaching one of the tasks to the `SshSession`, which means
   it gets dropped with the session itself, which leads the other task
   to error and exit.

Replace Default trait bound with a zero function on Summary/Dimension (#17975)
This lets us provide a context when constructing the zero value. We need
it so we can require anchors to be associated with a buffer id, which
we're doing as part of simplifying the multibuffer API.

/auto (#16696)
Add `/auto` behind a feature flag that's disabled for now, even for

We've decided on a different design for context inference, but there are
parts of /auto that will be useful for that, so we want them in the code
base even if they're unused for now.
