C projects with `"` as "brackets" that autoclose, may invoke panics when
edited at the end of the file.
With a single selection-caret (`ˇ`), at the end of the file,
```c
ifndef BAR_H
#define BAR_H
#include <stdbool.h>
int fn_branch(bool do_branch1, bool do_branch2);
#endif // BAR_H
#include"ˇ"
```
gets an LSP response from clangd
```jsonc
{
"filterText": "AGL/",
"insertText": "AGL/",
"insertTextFormat": 1,
"kind": 17,
"label": " AGL/",
"labelDetails": {},
"score": 0.78725427389144897,
"sortText": "40b67681AGL/",
"textEdit": {
"newText": "AGL/",
"range": { "end": { "character": 11, "line": 8 }, "start": { "character": 10, "line": 8 } }
}
}
```
which replaces `"` after the caret (character/column 11, 0-indexed).
This is reasonable, as regular follow-up (proposed in further
completions), is a suffix + a closing `"`:
<img width="842" height="259" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/ea56f621-7008-4ce2-99ba-87344ddf33d2"
/>
Yet when Zed handles user input of `"`, it panics due to multiple
reasons:
* after applying any snippet text edit, Zed did a selection change:
5537987630/crates/editor/src/editor.rs (L9539-L9545)
which caused eventual autoclose region invalidation:
5537987630/crates/editor/src/editor.rs (L2970)
This covers all cases that insert the `include""` text.
* after applying any user input and "plain" text edit, Zed did not
invalidate any autoclose regions at all, relying on the "bracket" (which
includes `"`) autoclose logic to rule edge cases out
* bracket autoclose logic detects previous `"` and considers the new
user input as a valid closure, hence no autoclose region needed.
But there is an autoclose bracket data after the plaintext completion
insertion (`AGL/`) really, and it's not invalidated after `"` handling
* in addition to that, `Anchor::is_valid` method in `text` panicked, and
required `fn try_fragment_id_for_anchor` to handle "pointing at odd,
after the end of the file, offset" cases as `false`
A test reproducing the feedback and 2 fixes added: proper, autoclose
region invalidation call which required the invalidation logic tweaked a
bit, and "superficial", "do not apply bad selections that cause panics"
fix in the editor to be more robust
Release Notes:
- Fixed panic with completion ranges and autoclose regions interop

Closes#34390
This PR fixes several Bash indentation issues:
- Adding indentation or comment using multi cursors no longer breaks
relative indentation
- Adding newline now places the cursor at the correct indent
- Typing a valid keyword triggers context-aware auto outdent
It also adds tests for all of them.
Release Notes:
- Fixed various issues with handling indentation in Bash.
Closes#33761
The problem was that in the indentation regex we were treating lines
that had `:` in them as requiring an indent on the next line, even if
that `:` was inside a comment.
Release Notes:
- Fixed YAML indentation for lines containing comments with `:` in them
Closes#19644#18151
Now, rewrapping markdown lists (unordered, ordered, and to-do lists) and
block quotes wrap them separately, without merging them together.
Additionally, it correctly indents subsequent lines.
With this input:
```md
1. This is a list item that is short.
2. This list item is a bit longer because I want to see if it wraps correctly after a rewrap operation in Zed. What do you think?
3. another short item
```
Output would be:
```md
1. This is a list item that is short.
2. This list item is a bit longer because I want to see if it wraps correctly
after a rewrap operation in Zed. What do you think?
3. another short item
```
Instead of:
```md
1. This is a list item that is short. 2. This list item is a bit longer because
I want to see if it wraps correctly after a rewrap operation in Zed. What
do you think? 3. another short item
```
Release Notes:
- Improved rewrap for markdown lists, todos, and block quotes.
As part of this I refactored the logic that enabled/disabled actions in
the debugger to happen at action registration time instead of using
command palette filters. This allows the menu to grey out actions correctly.
Release Notes:
- Add a "Run" menu to contain tasks and debugger
* stopped fetching LSP tasks for too long (but still use the hardcoded
value for the time being — the LSP tasks settings part is a simple bool
key and it's not very simple to fit in another value there)
* introduced `prefer_lsp` language task settings value, to control
whether in the gutter/modal/both/none LSP tasks are shown exclusively,
if possible
Release Notes:
- Added a way to prefer LSP tasks over Zed tasks
Don't hard wrap interactively; instead, soft wrap in `Bounded` mode
(editor width or 72 chars, whichever is smaller), and then hard wrap
before sending the commit message to git.
This also makes the soft wrap mode and width for commit messages
configurable in language settings.
Previously we didn't support soft wrap modes other than `EditorWidth` in
auto-height editors; I tried to add support for this by analogy with
code that was already there, and it seems to work pretty well.
Closes#27508
Release Notes:
- Fixed confusing wrapping behavior in commit message editors.
This includes the following data:
- Where we spawned the session from (gutter, scenario list, custom form
filled by the user)
- Which debug adapter was used
- Which dock the debugger is in

data about:
- How a session was spawned (gutter, scenario list or custom form)
- Which debug adapter was used
- Which dock the debugger is in

## Summary
### Actions
This PR implements actions that allow a user to "run to cursor" and
"evaluate selected text" while there's an active debug session and
exposes the functionality to the UI as well.
- Run to cursor: Can be accessed by right clicking on the gutter
- Evaluate selected text: Can be accessed by selecting text then right
clicking in the editor
### Bug fixes
I also fixed these bugs as well
- Panic when using debugger: Stop action
- Debugger actions command palette filter not working properly in all
cases
- We stopped displaying the correct label in the session's context menu
when a session was terminated

This adds a "workspace-hack" crate, see
[mozilla's](https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/3a265fdc9f33e5946f0ca0a04af73acd7e6d1a39/build/workspace-hack/Cargo.toml#l7)
for a concise explanation of why this is useful. For us in practice this
means that if I were to run all the tests (`cargo nextest r
--workspace`) and then `cargo r`, all the deps from the previous cargo
command will be reused. Before this PR it would rebuild many deps due to
resolving different sets of features for them. For me this frequently
caused long rebuilds when things "should" already be cached.
To avoid manually maintaining our workspace-hack crate, we will use
[cargo hakari](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari) to update the build files
when there's a necessary change. I've added a step to CI that checks
whether the workspace-hack crate is up to date, and instructs you to
re-run `script/update-workspace-hack` when it fails.
Finally, to make sure that people can still depend on crates in our
workspace without pulling in all the workspace deps, we use a `[patch]`
section following [hakari's
instructions](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari/0.9.36/cargo_hakari/patch_directive/index.html)
One possible followup task would be making guppy use our
`rust-toolchain.toml` instead of having to duplicate that list in its
config, I opened an issue for that upstream: guppy-rs/guppy#481.
TODO:
- [x] Fix the extension test failure
- [x] Ensure the dev dependencies aren't being unified by Hakari into
the main dependencies
- [x] Ensure that the remote-server binary continues to not depend on

Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/25034
When formatting buffers or reloading them after they change on disk, we
performed a diff between the buffer's current contents and the new
content. We need this diff in order preserve the positions of cursors
and other decorations when updating the buffer's text.
In order to handle changes within lines, we would previously compute a
*character-wise* diff. This was extremely expensive for large files.
This PR gets rid of the character-wise diff, and instead performs a
normal line-wise diff. Then, for certain replace hunks, we compute a
secondary word-based diff. Also, I've switched to the
[`imara-diff`](https://github.com/pascalkuthe/imara-diff) crate, instead
of `similar`.
Release Notes:

formatted.

This is a refactoring PR that does three things:
- First, it introduces a new `diff` crate that holds the previous
contents of the `git::diff` module, plus the `BufferChangeSet` type
formerly of `project::buffer_store`. The new crate is necessary since
simply moving `BufferChangeSet` into `git::diff` results in a dependency
cycle due to the use of `language::Buffer` to represent the diff base in
`BufferChangeSet`.
- Second, it renames the two main types in the new diff crate:
`BufferDiff` becomes `BufferDiffSnapshot`, and `BufferChangeSet` becomes
`BufferDiff`. This reflects that the relationship between these two
types (immutable cheaply-cloneable "value" type + stateful "resource
type" with subscriptions) mirrors existing pairs like
`Buffer`/`BufferSnapshot`. References to "change sets" throughout the
codebase are updated to refer to "diffs" instead.
- Finally, it moves the base_text field of the new BufferDiff type to
BufferDiffSnapshot.

This prototype is behind a feature flag and being merged to avoid
conflicts with further git-related resturctures.
To be a proper, public feature, this needs at least:
* showing deleted files
* better performance
* randomized tests
* `TODO`s in the `project_diff.rs` file fixed
The good thing is, >90% of the changes are in the `project_diff.rs` file
only, have a basic test and already work on simple cases.

This PR extracts the `InlineCompletionProvider` trait and its related
types out of `editor` and into a new `inline_completion` crate.
By doing so we're able to remove a dependency on `editor` from the

We did have to move `editor::Direction` into the `inline_completion`
crate, as it is referenced by the `InlineCompletionProvider`. This
should find a better home, at some point.

Fixes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/18405
In https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/18313, we introduced a
problem where git addition highlights might spuriously return when
undoing certain changes. It turned out, there were already some cases
where git hunk highlighting was incorrect when editing at the boundaries
of expanded diff hunks.
In this PR, I've introduced a test helper method for more rigorously
(and readably) testing the editor's git state. You can assert about the
entire state of an editor's diff decorations using a formatted diff:
```rust
cx.assert_diff_hunks(
r#"
- use some::mod1;
use some::mod2;
const A: u32 = 42;
- const B: u32 = 42;
const C: u32 = 42;
fn main() {
- println!("hello");
+ //println!("hello");
println!("world");
+ //
+ //
}
fn another() {
println!("another");
+ println!("another");
}
- fn another2() {
println!("another2");
}
"#
.unindent(),
);
```
This will assert about the editor's actual row highlights, not just the
editor's internal hunk-tracking state.
I rewrote all of our editor diff tests to use these more high-level
assertions, and it caught the new bug, as well as some pre-existing bugs
in the highlighting of added content.
The problem was how we *remove* highlighted rows. Previously, it relied
on supplying exactly the same range as one that we had previously
highlighted. I've added a `remove_highlighted_rows(ranges)` APIs which
is much simpler - it clears out any row ranges that intersect the given
ranges (which is all that we need for the Git diff use case).

This PR adds a rewrap command to the editor.
Executing this command will rewrap the text in the selection to the
maximum line width:

If there isn't an active selection, the selection will be expanded to
contiguous text from the cursor's location.
Rewrapping only works in Markdown, Plain Text, and within comments for
any other language.

This PR adds the `ui_macros` crate to allow building supporting macros
for the `ui` crate.
Additionally, it implements the `DerivePathStr` derive macro and the
`path_str` attribute macro. These macros work together to generate a
`path` method for enum variants, which is useful for creating
standardized string representations of enum variants.
The `DerivePathStr` macro provides the following functionality:
- Generates a `path` method for each enum variant.
- Allows specifying a prefix (required) and suffix (optional) for all
paths.
- Supports `strum` attributes for case conversion (e.g., snake_case,
lowercase).
Usage example:
```rust
#[derive(DerivePathStr)]
#[path_str(prefix = "my_prefix", suffix = ".txt")]
#[strum(serialize_all = "snake_case")]
enum MyEnum {
VariantOne,
VariantTwo,
}
// Generated paths:
// MyEnum::VariantOne.path() -> "my_prefix/variant_one.txt"
// MyEnum::VariantTwo.path() -> "my_prefix/variant_two.txt"
```
In a later PR this will be used to automate the creation of icon & image
paths in the `ui` crate.
This gives the following benefits:
1. Ensures standard naming of assets as paths are not manually
specified.
2. Makes adding new enum variants less tedious and error-prone.
3. Quickly catches missing or incorrect paths during compilation.
3. Adds a building block towards being able to lint for unused assets in
the future.

I decided to remove the GPUI APIs since `chrono` already provides this
functionality, and is already been used for this purpose in other parts
of the code (e.g.
[here](80402a6840/crates/zed/src/main.rs (L756))
or
[here](80402a6840/crates/ui/src/utils/format_distance.rs (L258)))
These usages end up calling the `time_format` crate, which takes in a
`UtcOffset`. It's probably cleaner to rewrite the crate to take in
`chrono` types, but that would require rewriting most of the code there.
