Goal: Allow zed to locate [`pixi`](https://github.com/prefix-dev/pixi)
environments
Changes:
- Uses a newer release of
[`python-environment-tools`](https://github.com/microsoft/python-environment-tools)
with the new `pet-pixi` create
- Adds `PythonEnvironmentKind::Pixi` as a possible environment kind, to
allow the rest of the code to detect the environment
I tested the changes locally. It found the correct pixi environment and
I was able to run `pytest` through the UI icon.
Release Notes:
- Added detection for pixi-environments

This message has confused me many times too: we printed the status as
"Downloading" when we were only checking whether we need to install a
given version of a language server.
This fixes the issue for Node-based language servers where we had the
same check in all implementations.
Closes #22241
Release Notes:
- Fixed some language servers reporting status as "Downloading..." when
only a version check was being done.
This PR fixes running Python commands that include paths with spaces by
wrapping python commands and their arguments in quotation marks.
I fixed this only in Python as I noticed this while trying to run
`pytest` in Zed.
Probably this is not the best approach as it doesn't fix other languages
too, though I don't know enough about the codebase to fix it like that.
I'm not even sure if it's actually feasible right now.
I didn't add tests for this either as I couldn't really understand how
to easily to that, I tried to look at other languages but couldn't find
one that tests their `ContextProvider` directly.

Potentially fixes#21404
This is a speculative fix, as while I was trying to repro this issue
I've noticed that introducing artificial delays in ToolchainLister::list
could impact apps responsiveness. These delays were essentially there to
stimulate PET taking a while to find venvs.
Release Notes:
- Improved app responsiveness in environments with multiple Python
virtual environments
I've also looked into not creating temp dirs in project directories and
succeeded at that for Mypy; no dice for rope though, I'll have to send a
patch to pylsp to fix that.
Closes#20646
Release Notes:
- Python: tweaked default pylsp settings to be less noisy (mypy and
pycodestyle are no longer enabled by default).
Closes #12080, #18649.

Still in progress:
1. I'd like to add configuration options for selecting a Python test
runner (either pytest or unittest) so that users can explicitly choose
which runner they'd like to use for running their tests. This preference
has to be configured as unittest-style tests can also be run by pytest,
meaning we can't rely on auto-discovery to choose the desired test
runner.
2. I'd like to add venv auto-discovery similar to the feature currently
provided by the terminal using detect_venv.
3. Unit tests.
Unfortunately I'm struggling a bit with how to add settings in the
appropriate location (e.g. Python language settings). Can anyone provide
me with some pointers and/or examples on how to either add extra
settings or to re-use the existing ones?
My rust programming level is OK-ish but I'm not very familiar with the
Zed project structure and could use some help.
I'm also open for pair programming as mentioned on the website if that
helps!
Release Notes:
- Added pytest-based test discovery and runnables for Python.
- Adds a configurable option for switching between unittest and pytest
as a test runner under Python language settings. Set "TASK_RUNNER" to
"unittest" under task settings for Python if you wish to use unittest to
run Python tasks; the default is pytest.

This fixes the issue of multiple language servers showing up as `node`
in the language server logs dropdown.
It does this by changing `language_server.name()` to return the
adapter's name, not the binary name, and changing types to make sure
that we always use this.

Python virtual environments)
Release Notes:
- Fixed overriding the path of a language server binary for all language
servers. `{"lsp":{"<lsp-name>":{"binary":{"path": "_"}}}}` will now work
for all language servers including those defined by extensions.
- (breaking change) To disable finding lsp adapters in your path, you
must now specify
`{"lsp":{"<lsp-name>":{"binary":{"ignore_system_version": true}}}}`.
Previously this was `{"lsp":{"<lsp-name>":{"binary":{"path_lookup":
false}}}}`. Note that this setting still does not apply to extensions.
- Removed automatic reinstallation of language servers. (It mostly
didn't work)

Context:
@bennetbo spotted a regression in handling of `cargo run` task in zed
repo following a merge of #13658. We've started invoking `cargo run`
from the folder of an active file whereas previously we did it from the
workspace root. We brainstormed few solutions that involved adding a
separate task that gets invoked at a workspace level, but I realized
that a cleaner solution may be to finally add user-configured task
variables. This way, we can choose which crate to run by default at a
workspace level.
This has been originally brought up in the context of javascript tasks
in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/12118#issuecomment-2129232114
Note that this is intended for internal use only for the time being.
/cc @RemcoSmitsDev we should be unblocked on having runner-dependant
tasks now.
Release notes:

Add runnable tasks for Python, starting with `unittest` from the
standard library. Both `TestCase`s (classes meant to be a unit of
testing) and individual test functions in a `TestCase` will have
runnable icons. For completeness, I also included a task that will run
`unittest` on the current file.
The implementation follows the `unittest` CLI. The unittest module can
be used from the command line to run tests from modules, classes or even
individual test methods:
```
python -m unittest test_module.TestClass
python -m unittest test_module.TestClass.test_method
```
```python
import unittest
class TestStringMethods(unittest.TestCase):
def test_upper(self):
self.assertEqual('foo'.upper(), 'FOO')
def test_isupper(self):
self.assertTrue('FOO'.isupper())
self.assertFalse('Foo'.isupper())
def test_split(self):
s = 'hello world'
self.assertEqual(s.split(), ['hello', 'world'])
# check that s.split fails when the separator is not a string
with self.assertRaises(TypeError):
s.split(2)
if __name__ == '__main__':
unittest.main()
```
From the snippet provided by `unittest` docs, a user may want to run
test_split independently of the other test functions in the test case.
Hence, I decided to make each test function runnable despite `TestCase`s
being the unit of testing.
## Example of running a `TestCase`

`unittest` will also run the `setUp` and `tearDown` fixtures.
Eventually, I want to add the more commonly used `pytest` runnables
(perhaps as an extension instead).

This PR changes the interface of ContextProvider, allowing it to inspect
*all* variables set so far during the process of building
`TaskVariables`. This makes it possible to capture e.g. an identifier in
tree-sitter query, process it and then export it as a task variable.
Notably, the list of variables includes captures prefixed with leading
underscore; they are removed after all calls to `build_context`, but it
makes it possible to capture something and then conditionally preserve
it (and perhaps modify it).

Release Notes:
- Improved tasks modal by highlighting a distinction between a task
template and concrete task instance and surfacing available keybindings
more prominently. Task templates are now always available in the modal,
even if there's already a history entry with the same label.
- Changed default key binding for "picker::UseSelectedQuery" to `opt-e`.
Part of https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/5141
* adds "run selection" and "run file" tasks for bash and Python.
* replaces newlines with `\n` symbols in the human-readable task labels
* properly escapes task command arguments when spawning the task in
terminal
Caveats:
* bash tasks will always use user's default shell to spawn the
selections, but they should rather respect the shebang line even if it's
not selected
* Python tasks will always use `python3` to spawn its tasks now, as
there's no proper mechanism in Zed to deal with different Python
executables
Release Notes:
- Added tasks for bash and Python to execute selections and open files
in terminal
This PR renames `language::Buffer::new` to `language::Buffer::local` and
simplifies its interface. Instead of taking a replica id (which should
always be 0 for the local case) and a `BufferId`, which was awkward and
verbose to construct, it simply takes text and a `cx`.
It uses the `cx` to derive a `BufferId` from the `EntityId` associated
with the `cx`, which should always be positive based on the following
analysis...
We convert the entity id to a u64 using this method on `EntityId`, which
is defined by macros in the `slotmap` crate:
```rust
pub fn as_ffi(self) -> u64 {
(u64::from(self.version.get()) << 32) | u64::from(self.idx)
}
```
If you look at the type of `version` in `KeyData`, it is non-zero:
```rust
#[derive(Clone, Copy, PartialEq, Eq, PartialOrd, Ord, Hash)]
pub struct KeyData {
idx: u32,
version: NonZeroU32,
}
```
This commit also adds `Context::reserve_model` and
`Context::insert_model` to determine a model's entity ID before it is
created, which we need in order to assign a `BufferId` in the background
when loading a buffer asynchronously.

This pull request introduces a new `InlineCompletionProvider` trait,
which enables making `Editor` copilot-agnostic and lets us push all the
copilot functionality into the `copilot_ui` module. Long-term, I would
like to merge `copilot` and `copilot_ui`, but right now `project`
depends on `copilot`, which makes this impossible.
The reason for adding this new trait is so that we can experiment with
other inline completion providers and swap them at runtime using config
settings.
Please, note also that we renamed some of the existing copilot actions
to be more agnostic (see release notes below). We still kept the old
actions bound for backwards-compatibility, but we should probably remove
them at some later version.
Also, as a drive-by, we added new methods to the `Global` trait that let
you read or mutate a global directly, e.g.:
```rs
MyGlobal::update(cx, |global, cx| {
});
```
Release Notes:
- Renamed the `copilot::Suggest` action to
`editor::ShowInlineCompletion`
- Renamed the `copilot::NextSuggestion` action to
`editor::NextInlineCompletion`
- Renamed the `copilot::PreviousSuggestion` action to
`editor::PreviousInlineCompletion`
- Renamed the `editor::AcceptPartialCopilotSuggestion` action to
`editor::AcceptPartialInlineCompletion`

Fixes: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/9234
This doesn't address `vue` as it has a slightly different install code,
but it should be fairly simple to add - I'll add it in in a follow-up.
This PR will allow all (except `vue`) node-based language servers to
update. It is mostly just throwing in a method into the `NodeRuntime`
trait that is used for checking if a package doesn't exist locally, or
is out of date, by checking the version against what's newest, and
installing. If any parsing of the `package.json` data fails along the
way, it assumes something has gone awry on the users system, logs the
error, and then proceeds with trying to install the package, so that
users don't get stuck on version if their package has some bad data.
Outside of adding this method, it just adds that check in all of the
language server's individual `fetch_server_binary` methods.
Release Notes:
- Added updating for node-based language servers
([#9234](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/9234)).
This fixes#9292 by adding a section to the language server settings
that allows users to specify the binary path and arguments with which to
start up a language server.
Example user settings for `rust-analyzer`:
```json
{
"lsp": {
"rust-analyzer": {
"binary": {
"path": "/Users/thorstenball/tmp/rust-analyzer-aarch64-apple-darwin",
"arguments": ["--no-log-buffering"]
}
}
}
}
```
Constraints:
* Right now this only allows ABSOLUTE paths.
* This is only used by `rust-analyzer` integration right now, but the
setting can be used for other language servers. We just need to update
the adapters to also respect that setting.
Release Notes:
- Added ability to specify `rust-analyzer` binary `path` (must be
absolute) and `arguments` in user settings. Example: `{"lsp":
{"rust-analyzer": {"binary": {"path": "/my/abs/path/rust-analyzer",
"arguments": ["--no-log-buffering"] }}}}`
([#9292](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/9292)).

This PR adds **internal** ability to run arbitrary language servers via
WebAssembly extensions. The functionality isn't exposed yet - we're just
landing this in this early state because there have been a lot of
changes to the `LspAdapter` trait, and other language server logic.
## Next steps
* Currently, wasm extensions can only define how to *install* and run a
language server, they can't yet implement the other LSP adapter methods,
such as formatting completion labels and workspace symbols.
* We don't have an automatic way to install or develop these types of
extensions
* We don't have a way to package these types of extensions in our
extensions repo, to make them available via our extensions API.
* The Rust extension API crate, `zed-extension-api` has not yet been
published to crates.io, because we still consider the API a work in
progress.

- Moves languages module from `zed` into a separate crate. That way we
have less of a long pole at the end of compilation.
- Removes moot dependencies on editor/picker. This is totally harmless
and might help in the future if we decide to decouple picker from
editor.
Before:
```
Number of crates that depend on 'picker' but not on 'editor': 1
Total number of crates that depend on 'picker': 13
Total number of crates that depend on 'editor': 30
```
After:
```
Number of crates that depend on 'picker' but not on 'editor': 5
Total number of crates that depend on 'picker': 12
Total number of crates that depend on 'editor': 26
```
The more crates depend on just picker but not editor, the better in that
case.
