Batch diagnostics updates (#35794)
Diagnostics updates were programmed in Zed based off the r-a LSP push
diagnostics, with all related updates happening per file.

https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/19230 and especially
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/32269 brought in pull
diagnostics that could produce results for thousands files
simultaneously.

It was noted and addressed on the local side in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/34022 but the remote side was
still not adjusted properly.

This PR

* removes redundant diagnostics pull updates on remote clients, as
buffer diagnostics are updated via buffer sync operations separately
* batches all diagnostics-related updates and proto messages, so
multiple diagnostic summaries (per file) could be sent at once,
specifically, 1 (potentially large) diagnostics summary update instead
of N*10^3 small ones.

Buffer updates are still sent per buffer and not updated, as happening
separately and not offending the collab traffic that much.

Release Notes:

- Improved diagnostics performance in the collaborative mode

lsp: Fix workspace diagnostics lag & add streaming support (#34022)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/33980
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/33979

- Switches to the debounce task pattern for diagnostic summary
computations, which most importantly lets us do them only once when a
large number of DiagnosticUpdated events are received at once.
- Makes workspace diagnostic requests not time out if a partial result
is received.
- Makes diagnostics from workspace diagnostic partial results get
merged.

There might be some related areas where we're not fully complying with
the LSP spec but they may be outside the scope of what this PR should
include.

Release Notes:

- Added support for streaming LSP workspace diagnostics.
- Fixed editor freeze from large LSP workspace diagnostic responses.

editor: Improve minimap performance (#33067)
This PR aims to improve the minimap performace. This is primarily
achieved by disabling/removing stuff that is not shown in the minimal as
well as by assuring the display map is not updated during minimap
prepaint.

This should already be much better in parts, as the block map as well as
the fold map will be less frequently updated due to the minimap
prepainting (optimally, they should never be, but I think we're not
quite there yet).
For this, I had to remove block rendering support for the minimap, which
is not as bad as it sounds: Practically, we were currently not rendering
most blocks anyway, there were issues due to this (e.g. scrolling any
visible block offscreen in the main editor causes scroll jumps
currently) and in the long run, the minimap will most likely need its
own block map or a different approach anyway. The existing
implementation caused resizes to occur very frequently for practically
no benefit. Can pull this out into a separate PR if requested, most
likely makes the other changes here easier to discuss.

This is WIP as we are still hitting some code path here we definitely
should not be hitting. E.g. there seems to be a rerender roughly every
second if the window is unfocused but visible which does not happen when
the minimap is disabled.

While this primarily focuses on the minimap, it also touches a few other
small parts not related to the minimap where I noticed we were doing too
much stuff during prepaint. Happy for any feedback there aswell.

Putting this up here already so we have a place to discuss the changes
early if needed.

Release Notes:

- Improved performance with the minimap enabled.
- Fixed an issue where interacting with blocks in the editor would
sometimes not properly work with the minimap enabled.

Remove into SelectionEffects from .change_selections (#33554)
In #32656 I generalized the argument to change selections to allow
controling both the scroll and the nav history (and the completion
trigger).

To avoid conflicting with ongoing debugger cherry-picks I left the
argument as an `impl Into<>`, but I think it's clearer to make callers
specify what they want here.

I converted a lot of `None` arguments to `SelectionEffects::no_scroll()`
to be exactly compatible; but I think many people used none as an "i
don't care" value in which case Default::default() might be more
appropraite

editor: Add minimap (#26893)
## Overview

This PR adds the minimap feature to the Zed editor, closely following
the [design from Visual Studio
Code](https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/getstarted/userinterface#_minimap).
When configured, a second instance of the editor will appear to the left
of the scrollbar. This instance is not interactive and it has a slimmed
down set of annotations, but it is otherwise just a zoomed-out version
of the main editor instance. A thumb shows the line boundaries of the
main viewport, as well as the progress through the document. Clicking on
a section of code in the minimap will jump the editor to that code.
Dragging the thumb will act like the scrollbar, moving sequentially
through the document.

![screenshot of Zed with three editors open and the minimap enabled,
showing the
slider](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/4178d23a-a5ea-4e38-b871-06dd2a8f9560)

## New settings

This adds a `minimap` section to the editor settings with the following
keys:

### `show`

When to show the minimap in the editor.
This setting can take three values:
1. Show the minimap if the editor's scrollbar is visible: `"auto"`
2. Always show the minimap: `"always"`
3. Never show the minimap: `"never"` (default)

### `thumb`

When to show the minimap thumb.
This setting can take two values:
1. Show the minimap thumb if the mouse is over the minimap: `"hover"`
2. Always show the minimap thumb: `"always"` (default)

### `width`

The width of the minimap in pixels.

Default: `100`

### `font_size`

The font size of the minimap in pixels.

Default: `2`

## Providing feedback

In order to keep the PR focused on development updates, please use the
discussion thread for feature suggestions and usability feedback: #26894

## Features left to add

- [x] fix scrolling performance
- [x] user settings for enable/disable, width, text size, etc.
- [x] show overview of visible lines in minimap
- [x] clicking on minimap should navigate to the corresponding section
of code
- ~[ ] more prominent highlighting in the minimap editor~
- ~[ ] override scrollbar auto setting to always when minimap is set to
always show~

Release Notes:

- Added minimap for high-level overview and quick navigation of editor
contents.

Use rust-analyzer's flycheck as source of cargo diagnostics (#29779)
Follow-up of https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/29706

Instead of doing `cargo check` manually, use rust-analyzer's flycheck:
at the cost of more sophisticated check command configuration, we keep
much less code in Zed, and get a proper progress report.

User-facing UI does not change except `diagnostics_fetch_command` and
`env` settings removed from the diagnostics settings.

Allow to fetch cargo diagnostics separately (#29706)
Adjusts the way `cargo` and `rust-analyzer` diagnostics are fetched into
Zed.

Nothing is changed for defaults: in this mode, Zed does nothing but
reports file updates, which trigger rust-analyzers'
mechanisms:

* generating internal diagnostics, which it is able to produce on the
fly, without blocking cargo lock.
Unfortunately, there are not that many diagnostics in r-a, and some of
them have false-positives compared to rustc ones

* running `cargo check --workspace --all-targets` on each file save,
taking the cargo lock
For large projects like Zed, this might take a while, reducing the
ability to choose how to work with the project: e.g. it's impossible to
save multiple times without long diagnostics refreshes (may happen
automatically on e.g. focus loss), save the project and run it instantly
without waiting for cargo check to finish, etc.

In addition, it's relatively tricky to reconfigure r-a to run a
different command, with different arguments and maybe different env
vars: that would require a language server restart (and a large project
reindex) and fiddling with multiple JSON fields.

The new mode aims to separate out cargo diagnostics into its own loop so
that all Zed diagnostics features are supported still.

For that, an extra mode was introduced:

```jsonc
"rust": {
  // When enabled, Zed runs `cargo check --message-format=json`-based commands and
  // collect cargo diagnostics instead of rust-analyzer.
  "fetch_cargo_diagnostics": false,
  // A command override for fetching the cargo diagnostics.
  // First argument is the command, followed by the arguments.
  "diagnostics_fetch_command": [
    "cargo",
    "check",
    "--quiet",
    "--workspace",
    "--message-format=json",
    "--all-targets",
    "--keep-going"
  ],
  // Extra environment variables to pass to the diagnostics fetch command.
  "env": {}
}
```

which calls to cargo, parses its output and mixes in with the existing
diagnostics:

Add searchable global tab switcher (#28047)
resolves #24655
resolves #23945

I haven't yet added a default binding for the new command. #27797 added `:ls` and
`:buffers` which in my opinion should use the global searchable version
given that that matches the vim semantics of those commands better than
just showing the tabs in the local pane.

There's also a question of what to do when you select a tab from another
pane, should the focus jump to that pane or should that tab move to the
currently focused pane? For now I've implemented the former.

Release Notes:

- Added `tab_switcher::ToggleAll` to search open tabs from all panes and focus the selected one.

removed the diagnostic style for "active but invalid" case: presumably,
it served as some sort of a cursor to show where to move on after the

Add initial inline diagnostics support (#25297)

Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/4901

Takes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/22668 and fixes all

Inline diagnostics are disabled by default, but can be enabled via
settings permanently, or temporarily toggled with the `editor:

Inline diagnostics does not show currently active diagnostics group, as
it gets inline into the editor too, inside the text.
Inline git blame takes precedence and is shown instead of the
diagnostics, edit predictions dim the diagnostics if located on the same
line.

One notable drawback of the implementation is the inability to wrap,
making inline diagnostics cut off the right side:

![image](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/6e87268a-b51a-4a2b-8b8d-01d932c62fea)

(same as inline git blame and other elements to the right of the text)
Given that it's disabled by default and go to next/prev diagnostics will
show them better, seems fine to leave in the first iteration.

Migrate more events to telemetry::event! macro (#24102)
I believe this takes care of the remaining events running through the
old flow that requires transformation at the collab server level. I
think all events are now going through `telemetry::event!()`.

For anyone curious where the new telemetry names are coming from, you
can check the `for_snowflake` function within
`crates/collab/src/api/events.rs`, to see how collab is currently
transforming the events going through the old flow.

Eliminate GPUI View, ViewContext, and WindowContext types (#22632)
There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:

- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`

Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!

Tasks:

- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Fix Zed rendering
- [x] [@mikayla-maki] Fix todo! macros and comments
- [x] Fix a bug where the editor would not be redrawn because of view
caching
- [x] remove publicness window.notify() and replace with
`AppContext::notify`
- [x] remove `observe_new_window_models`, replace with
`observe_new_models` with an optional window
- [x] Fix a bug where the project panel would not be redrawn because of
the wrong refresh() call being used
- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`
- [x] Fix conflicts
- [x] Simplify generic code where possible
- [x] Rename types
- [ ] Update docs

### issues post merge

- [x] Issues switching between normal and insert mode
- [x] Assistant re-rendering failure
- [x] Vim test failures
- [x] Mac build issue

Improve multibuffer excerpt affordances (#22167)
Changes:
- [x] Increase expand affordance surface area
- [x] Ensure expand buttons have tooltips with keybindings
- [x] Make line numbers clickable to jump you to location (only in
multibuffers)
- [x] Hide the "Jump To File" element in not-focused excerpts

Before merging it:

- [x] Fix off-by-one header focus styles glitch

Improvements to consider for follow-up PRs:

1. Experiment with increasing the width of the clickable surface area
for line numbers
2. Don't show (or disable) the "expand excerpt" button when at the top
or bottom edge of the file
3. Once you jump to location, centralize the cursor scroll position

Release Notes:

- Improved multibuffer's "expand excerpt" affordance
- Fixed "jump to file/location" and "expand excerpt" keybinding display
- Made clicking on line numbers in multibuffers jump you to cursor
location in file

Expand diagnostic excerpts using heuristics on syntactic information from TreeSitter (#21942)
This is quite experimental and untested in languages other than Rust.
It's written to attempt to do something sensible in many languages. Due
to its experimental nature, just releasing to staff, and so not
including it in release notes. Future release note might be "Improved
diagnostic excerpts by using syntactic info to determine the context
lines to show."

Fix item closing overly triggering save dialogues (#21374)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/12029

Allows to introspect project items inside items more deeply, checking
them for being dirty.
For that:
* renames `project::Item` into `project::ProjectItem`
* adds an `is_dirty(&self) -> bool` method to the renamed trait
* changes the closing logic to only care about dirty project items when
checking for save prompts conditions
* save prompts are raised only if the item is singleton without a
project path; or if the item has dirty project items that are not open
elsewhere

Release Notes:

- Fixed item closing overly triggering save dialogues

Avoid endless loop of the diagnostic updates (#21209)
Follow-up of https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/21173

Rust-analyzer with `checkOnSave` enabled will push diagnostics for a
file after each diagnostics refresh (e.g. save, file open, file close).

If there's a file that is not open in any pane and has only warnings,
and the diagnostics editor has warnings toggled off, then

0. rust-analyzer will push the corresponding warnings after initial load
1. the diagnostics editor code registers
`project::Event::DiagnosticsUpdated` for the corresponding file path and
opens the corresponding buffer to read its associated diagnostics from
the snapshot
2. opening the buffer would send `textDocument/didOpen` which would
trigger rust-analyzer to push the same diagnostics
3. meanwhile, the diagnostics editor would filter out all diagnostics
for that buffer, dropping the open buffer and effectively closing it
4. closing the buffer will send `textDocument/didClose` which would
trigger rust-analyzer to push the same diagnostics again, as those are
`cargo check` ones, still present in the file
5. GOTO 1

Release Notes:

- Fixed diagnostics editor not scrolling properly under certain
conditions
