Closes#27073
Currently, when searching for a file with Ctrl+P, and the first file
found is the active one, file_finder skips focus to the second file
automatically. This PR adds a setting to disable this and make the first
file always the focused one.
Default setting is still skipping the active file.
Release Notes:
- Added the `skip_focus_for_active_in_search` setting for the file
finder, which allows turning off the default behavior of skipping focus
on the active file while searching in the file finder.

Modified version of #25950. We still use worktree paths, but repo paths
with a status that lie outside the worktree are not excluded; instead,
we relativize them by adding `..`. This makes the list in the git panel
match what you'd get from running `git status` (with the repo's worktree
root as the working directory).
- [x] Implement + test new unrelativization logic
- [x] ~~When collecting repositories, dedup by .git abs path, so
worktrees can share a repo at the project level~~ dedup repos at the
repository selector layer, with repos coming from larger worktrees being
preferred
- [x] Open single-file worktree with diff when activating a path not in
the worktree

Closes#10167
This is take 2 on https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/2341 which
was closed due to lack of migrator.
This PR contains rename of following keymap actions:
```sh
1. ["editor::GoToPrevHunk", { "center_cursor": true }] -> ["editor::GoToPreviousHunk", { "center_cursor": true }]
2. "editor::GoToPrevDiagnostic" -> "editor::GoToPreviousDiagnostic"
3. "editor::ContextMenuPrev" -> "editor::ContextMenuPrevious"
4. "search::SelectPrevMatch" -> "search::SelectPreviousMatch"
5. "file_finder::SelectPrev" -> "file_finder::SelectPrevious"
6. "menu::SelectPrev" -> "menu::SelectPrevious"
7. "editor::TabPrev" -> "editor::Backtab"
```
Release Notes:
- Renamed several keymap actions for consistency (e.g., `GoToPrevHunk` →
`GoToPreviousHunk`, `TabPrev` → `Backtab`). Your existing configured
keybindings will still work. You can click **"Backup and Update"** at
the top of your keymap file to easily update to the new actions.

Closes#7711
This PR changes the file finder to shorten the path portion of each
match by replacing a segment with `...`, if it would otherwise overflow
horizontally. Details:
- The overflow calculation is based on a crude linear width estimate for
ASCII text at the current em width. No elision is done for non-ASCII
paths.
- A path component will not be elided if it contains a matching position
for the file finder's search, or if it's the first or last component.
- Elision is only applied when it is successful in shortening the path
enough to not overflow.
Release Notes:
- Improved the appearance of the file finder when long paths are shown
by eliding path segments
This reverts commit 9ef0501853 due to a
panic.
```
"payload": "9 is not a valid char boundary in path \"crates/…/LiveKitBridge/\"",
}
}
This PR makes progress on #7711 by identifying any common prefix of the
paths in the file finder's search results, and replacing the "interior"
of that prefix---every path segment but the first and last---with `...`,
when a heuristic indicates that the longest path would otherwise
overflow the modal.
The elision is not applied to any segment that contains a match for the
search query.
There may be more work to do on #7711 in the case of long result paths
that do not share a significant common prefix.
- Improved display of long paths in the file finder modal
Closes#22247
- [x] Do not close pinned tab on keyboard shortcuts like `ctrl+w` or
`alt+f4`
- [x] Close pinned tab on context menu action, menu bar action, or vim
bang
- [x] While closing pinned tab via shortcut (where it won't close),
instead activate any other non-pinned tab in same pane
- [x] Else, if any other pane contains non-pinned tab, activate that
- [x] Tests
Release Notes:
- Pinned tab now stay open when using close shortcuts, auto focuses to
any other non-pinned tab instead.
There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:
- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`
Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!
Tasks:
- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Fix Zed rendering
- [x] [@mikayla-maki] Fix todo! macros and comments
- [x] Fix a bug where the editor would not be redrawn because of view
caching
- [x] remove publicness window.notify() and replace with
`AppContext::notify`
- [x] remove `observe_new_window_models`, replace with
`observe_new_models` with an optional window
- [x] Fix a bug where the project panel would not be redrawn because of
the wrong refresh() call being used
- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`
- [x] Fix conflicts
- [x] Simplify generic code where possible
- [x] Rename types
- [ ] Update docs
### issues post merge
- [x] Issues switching between normal and insert mode
- [x] Assistant re-rendering failure
- [x] Vim test failures
- [x] Mac build issue
Use `Fs` instead of `std::fs` and do entry existence checks better:
* first, check the worktree entry existence without any FS checks
* then, only for local cases, use `Fs` to check for abs_path existence
of items, in case those came from single-filed worktrees that got closed
and removed.
Remote entries do not get file existence checks, so might try opening
previously removed buffers for now.
This simplifies `PathWithPosition` by making the common use case
concrete and removing the manual, incomplete Windows path parsing.
Windows paths also don't get '/'s replaced by '\\'s anymore to limit the
responsibility of the code to just parsing out the suffix and creating
`PathBuf` from the rest. `Path::file_name()` is now used to extract the
filename and potential suffix instead of manual parsing from the full
input. This way e.g. Windows paths that begin with a drive letter are
handled correctly without platform-specific hacks.
### TODO
- [x] Make sure keybinding shows up in pane + menu
- [x] Selection tool in the editor toolbar
- [x] Application Menu
- [x] Add more options to pane + menu
- Go to File...
- Go to Symbol in Project...
- [x] Add go items to the selection tool in the editor:
- Go to Symbol in Editor...
- Go to Line/Column...
- Next Problem
- Previous Problem
- [x] Fix a bug where modals opened from a context menu aren't focused
correclty
- [x] Determine if or what needs to be done with project actions:
- Difficulty is that these are exposed in the UI via clicking the
project name in the titlebar or by right clicking the root entry in the
project panel. But they require reading and are two clicks away. Is that
sufficient?
- Add Folder to Project
- Open a new project
- Open recent
- [x] Get a style pass
- [x] Implement style pass
- [x] Fix the wrong actions in the selection menu
- [x] Show selection tool toggle in the 'editor settings' thing
- [x] Put preferences section from the app menu onto the right hand user
menu
- [x] Add Project menu into app menu to replace 'preferences' section,
and put the rest of the actions there
- [ ] ~~Adopt `...` convention for opening a surface~~ uncertain what
this convention is.
- [x] Adopt link styling for webview actions
- [x] Set lucide hamburger for menu icon
- [x] Gate application menu to only show on Linux and Windows
Release Notes:
- Added a 'selection and movement' tool to the Editor's toolbar, as well
as controls to toggle it and a setting to remove it (`"toolbar":
{"selections_menu": true/false }`)
- Changed the behavior of the `+` menu in the tab bar to use standard
actions and keybindings. Replaced 'New Center Terminal' with 'New
Terminal', and 'New Search', with the usual 'Deploy Search'. Also added
item-creating actions to this menu.
- Added an 'application' menu to the titlebar to Linux and Windows
builds of Zed
This PR adds support for handling action releases — events that
are fired when the user releases all the modifier keys that were part of
an action-triggering shortcut.
If the user holds modifiers and invokes several actions sequentially via
shortcuts (same or different), only the last action is "released" when
its modifier keys released.
~The following methods were added to `Div`:~
- ~`capture_action_release()`~
- ~`on_action_release()`~
- ~`on_boxed_action_release()`~
~They work similarly to `capture_action()`, `on_action()` and
`on_boxed_action()`.~
comment](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/8782#issuecomment-2009154646).
This is just a refactor. I noticed that we now have a `project_core`
crate, which mainly contains the `Worktree` type and its private
helpers, plus the project's settings.
In this PR, I've renamed that crate to `worktree` and did some minor
simplification to its module structure. I also extracted a new
`WorktreeSettings` settings type from the `ProjectSettings`, so that the
worktree settings could live in the worktree crate. This way, the crate
is now exclusively about worktree logic.
Fixes#7519
Optimizes file finder subscriptions — it now only subscribes to
worktrees updates instead of all project updates.
Project panel could also be optimized this way, I guess.
Release Notes:
- Fix selection resets in the file finder during language server
startup ([7519](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/7519))
File finder looks and feels a little bulky now. It duplicates file names
and consumes too much space for each file.
This PR makes it more compact:
- File name is trimmed from the path, removing duplication
- Path is placed to the right of the file name, improving space usage
- Path is muted and printed in small size to not distract attention from
the main information (file names)
It makes search results easier to look through, consistent with the
editor tabs, and closer in terms of usage to mature editors.
Release Notes:
- File finder UI enhancement
Follow-up of https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/6947 (cc
@alygin) that fixes a few style nits and refactors the code around:
* use already stored `currently_opened_path` to decide what to do with
the history item sorting
* use the same method to set history items, encapsulate the bubbling up
logic there
* ensure history elements are properly sorted before populating
The main reason to change all that is the new comparator in the previous
version:
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/6947/files#diff-eac7c8c99856f77cee39117708cd1467fd5bbc8805da2564f851951638020842R234
that almost violated `util::extend_sorted` contract, requiring both
collections to be sorted the same way as the comparator would be: it did
work, because we bubbled currently open item up in the history items
list manually, and that we have only one such item.
This PR completes the first task of the Tabless editing feature (#6424).
It makes file finder select the previously opened file by default which
allows the user to quickly switch between two last opened files by
clicking `Cmd-P + Enter`.
This feature was also requested in #4663 comments.
Release Notes:
* Improved file finder selection: currently opened item is not selected now
* applicable history items were sorted by latest opened order, now
sorted by match score as the search matches
* adjust the match sorting to show paths in the alphanumerical order (in
case of a tie on other params)
Release Notes:
- Improved file finder entries ordering
