https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/30972 brought up another
case where our context is not enough to track the actual source of the
issue: we get a general top-level error without inner error.
The reason for this was `.ok_or_else(|| anyhow!("failed to read HEAD
SHA"))?; ` on the top level.
The PR finally reworks the way we use anyhow to reduce such issues (or
at least make it simpler to bubble them up later in a fix).
On top of that, uses a few more anyhow methods for better readability.
* `.ok_or_else(|| anyhow!("..."))`, `map_err` and other similar error
conversion/option reporting cases are replaced with `context` and
`with_context` calls
* in addition to that, various `anyhow!("failed to do ...")` are
stripped with `.context("Doing ...")` messages instead to remove the
parasitic `failed to` text
* `anyhow::ensure!` is used instead of `if ... { return Err(...); }`
calls
* `anyhow::bail!` is used instead of `return Err(anyhow!(...));`

This adds a "workspace-hack" crate, see
[mozilla's](https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/3a265fdc9f33e5946f0ca0a04af73acd7e6d1a39/build/workspace-hack/Cargo.toml#l7)
for a concise explanation of why this is useful. For us in practice this
means that if I were to run all the tests (`cargo nextest r
--workspace`) and then `cargo r`, all the deps from the previous cargo
command will be reused. Before this PR it would rebuild many deps due to
resolving different sets of features for them. For me this frequently
caused long rebuilds when things "should" already be cached.
To avoid manually maintaining our workspace-hack crate, we will use
[cargo hakari](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari) to update the build files
when there's a necessary change. I've added a step to CI that checks
whether the workspace-hack crate is up to date, and instructs you to
re-run `script/update-workspace-hack` when it fails.
Finally, to make sure that people can still depend on crates in our
workspace without pulling in all the workspace deps, we use a `[patch]`
section following [hakari's
instructions](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari/0.9.36/cargo_hakari/patch_directive/index.html)
One possible followup task would be making guppy use our
`rust-toolchain.toml` instead of having to duplicate that list in its
config, I opened an issue for that upstream: guppy-rs/guppy#481.
TODO:
- [x] Fix the extension test failure
- [x] Ensure the dev dependencies aren't being unified by Hakari into
the main dependencies
- [x] Ensure that the remote-server binary continues to not depend on
LibSSL

### DISCLAIMER
> As of 6th March 2025, debugger is still in development. We plan to
merge it behind a staff-only feature flag for staff use only, followed
by non-public release and then finally a public one (akin to how Git
panel release was handled). This is done to ensure the best experience
when it gets released.

- [x] Fix `[un]stage` hunk operations cancelling pending ones
- [x] Add test
- [ ] bugs I stumbled upon (try to repro again before merging)
- [x] holding `git::StageAndNext` skips hunks randomly
- [x] Add test
- [x] restoring a file keeps it in the git panel
- [x] Double clicking on `toggle staged` fast makes Zed disagree with
`git` CLI
- [x] checkbox shows ✔️ (fully staged) after a single

Closes#12553
* [x] Fix `diff_hunk_before`
* [x] Fix failure to show deleted text when expanding hunk w/ cursor on
second line of the hunk
* [x] Failure to expand diff hunk below the cursor.
* [x] Delete the whole file, and expand the diff. Backspace over the
deleted hunk, panic!
* [x] Go-to-line now counts the diff hunks, but it should not
* [x] backspace at the beginning of a deleted hunk deletes too much text
* [x] Indent guides are rendered incorrectly
* [ ] Fix randomized multi buffer tests
Maybe:
* [ ] Buffer search should include deleted text (in vim mode it turns
out I use `/x` all the time to jump to the next x I can see).
* [ ] vim: should refuse to switch into insert mode if selection is
fully within a diff.
* [ ] vim `o` command when cursor is on last line of deleted hunk.
* [ ] vim `shift-o` on first line of deleted hunk moves cursor but
doesn't insert line
* [x] `enter` at end of diff hunk inserts a new line but doesn't move
cursor
* [x] (`shift-enter` at start of diff hunk does nothing)
* [ ] Inserting a line just before an expanded hunk collapses it
Release Notes:
- Improved diff rendering, allowing you to navigate with your cursor
inside of deleted text in diff hunks.

Closes#4642
- Added the ability to switch to helix normal mode, with an additional
helix visual mode.
- <kbd>ctrl</kbd><kbd>h</kbd> from Insert mode goes to Helix Normal
mode. <kbd> i </kbd> and <kbd> a </kbd> to go back.
- Need to find a way to perform the helix normal mode selection with
<kbd> w </kbd>, <kbd>e </kbd>, <kbd> b </kbd> as a first step. Need to
figure out how the mode will interoperate with the VIM mode as the new
additions are in the same crate.
This changes the `/workflow` command so that instead of emitting edits
in separate steps, the user is presented with a single tab, with an
editable diff that they can apply to the buffer.
Todo
* Assistant panel
* [x] Show a patch title and a list of changed files in a block
decoration
* [x] Don't store resolved patches as state on Context. Resolve on
demand.
* [ ] Better presentation of patches in the panel
* [ ] Show a spinner while patch is streaming in
* Patches
* [x] Preserve leading whitespace in new text, auto-indent insertions
* [x] Ensure patch title is very short, to fit better in tab
* [x] Improve patch location resolution, prefer skipping whitespace over
skipping `}`
* [x] Ensure patch edits are auto-indented properly
* [ ] Apply `Update` edits via a diff between the old and new text, to
get fine-grained edits.
* Proposed changes editor
* [x] Show patch title in the tab
* [x] Add a toolbar with an "Apply all" button
* [x] Make `open excerpts` open the corresponding location in the base
buffer (https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/18591)
* [x] Add an apply button above every hunk
(https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/18592)
* [x] Expand all diff hunks by default
(https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/18598)
* [x] Fix https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/18589
* [x] Syntax highlighting doesn't work until the buffer is edited
(https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/18648)
* [x] Disable LSP interaction in Proposed Changes editor
(https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/18945)
* [x] No auto-indent? (https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/18984)
* Prompt
* [ ] make sure old_text is unique

This PR makes the `Buffer::apply_ops` method infallible for
`text::Buffer` and `language::Buffer`.
We discovered that `text::Buffer::apply_ops` was only fallible due to
`apply_undo`, which didn't actually need to be fallible.

This lets us provide a context when constructing the zero value. We need
it so we can require anchors to be associated with a buffer id, which
we're doing as part of simplifying the multibuffer API.

This pull request introduces collaboration for the assistant panel by
turning `Context` into a CRDT. `ContextStore` is responsible for sending
and applying operations, as well as synchronizing missed changes while
the connection was lost.
Contexts are shared on a per-project basis, and only the host can share
them for now. Shared contexts can be accessed via the `History` tab in
the assistant panel.
